Your favorite couple is returning to TV in a new scripted sitcom Mann and Wife, that serves up laugher and love while shedding a positive light on the blended black family experience.

David plays Daniel, a police officer, and Tamela plays Toni, a school teacher. After falling in love they get married and the newlyweds move into Daniel’s house in the Atlanta suburbs with their four children (DJ, Tasha, Darren and Terri) and adjust to their new lives as a blended family.

In an exclusive interview with CocoaFab, David and Tamela, co-creators of the show which premieres on Bounce, dished about why they rallied around this scripted comedy show.

“We wanted to put some positive images of black families out there. You know. there’s enough stuff that doesn’t show us or doesn’t put us in a good light,” David explained.

“We wanted something that the whole family can sit down and watch and you know the parents not be embarrassed of the kids hearing or seeing something,” he said. Tamela chimed in, “covering eyes and ears.” David continued. “…Something the whole family can sit down and watch, something positive that not only made you laugh, but made you think and you got some stories and you not even know that you’re getting teaching moments during the show.”

David and Tamela are married in real life and from stage to screen, they have made us laugh out loud playing some of the most over-the-top characters in many Tyler Perry productions. Most memorable of their roles, David played the clueless Mr. Brown in Meet the Browns, who was the father of Tamela’s sanctified-and-saved character Cora. Tamela is also an award-winning gospel artist with impeccable vocals.

Some of the issues in the family show will center around the children getting acclimated with their “new” parent. Tamela explains that episode:

“One issue will be that because we’re all in the family I have two daughters and David has two sons and what happens on one episode is I have to explain to my son which is David’s son now that he doesn’t need another mother,” she said.

“I’m like I know I’m not your biological mother and I’m not trying to take the place of your mother but I’m just here to help give you guidance and love you and help you through life, just like my own daughters. I have to show him love without bashing him… I’m just there for him to support him as another mother, but if he chooses not to call me mother that’s fine,”she says about the episode.

A comedy about a blended family is art imitating the Mann’s real life. David explains: “We’re a blended family. We definitely had to deal with those types of issues in our real life.”

Tamela continued: “Our lives seem seamless, even though we’re a blended family, but I wanted everyone when they look at us [to see] just family. It’s not his kids, her kids, all that kind of thing. We’re just one family.”

If you miss David playing characters sprinkled with a little bit of crazy, no worries this comedy has got you covered!

“I play an undercover detective. So you get to see me dealing with all types of undercover operational deals,” he said. “You’ll get to see us do different characters. So we go undercover as a bunch of different characters.”

The series premieres Tuesday, April 7 @ 9 p.m. ET/8 CT on Bounce TV,
